This is our reverential take on the pathbreaking “Rutherford’s Experiment”. It is an experiment that changed the way we do science and continues to inspire many a physicist to this day, more than a century later. This video sums it all up - the gravitas, the drama, and the contributions of an undergraduate student that brought about a revolution in our understanding of atomic physics. By design, it is a simple one: bombard an ultrathin metallic sheet with alpha particles and catch the particles that pass through on the other side. But Mr Marsden, the undergraduate student, collaborated with his mentor Mr Geiger; together, they decided to look for helium nuclei where they shouldn’t be found. After several iterations, Rutherford, Geiger, and Marsden found that a minuscule fraction of alpha particles are reflected by incredible angles. The rest, as they say, is history!
